a lost turkey

every blue moon or so, we will have some wild turkeys show up at the farm. so when i was coming back from the post office and saw one out by the road, i didn't think anything of it. but, when i saw that same one up by the house a few hours later, alone and looking lost, i did wonder what the fuck is going on. hopefully it will get into the woods and find the others, or at the very least, get out of this heat. it's near 90 degrees today. no air moving at all. one of those days where you are wearing a coat of sweat within seconds. at least i'm not stoned today. i would have been convinced that turkey was coming for me.

the Yankees got the sweep yesterday, 3-2. they won in the bottom of the 9th on a botched pop up. that was about the only exciting part of the game. it was literally like watching paint dry. they take on Texas tonight. hopefully they can keep winning.

the Sunday night shows were good last night. Big Brother made me laugh. Ray Donovan was pretty good. The Strain was excellent once again. Last Week Tonight was fucking brilliant. and finally, Masters of Sex was pretty good as well. i was able to get all the shows watched and was in bed a little after 1 AM. of course, i was back up a little before 7 AM. the bags under my eyes are atrocious. i'm sure i'll get some good sleep sometime before i die.

i will be watching Monday Night Raw tonight. hopefully, it will be better than the baseball game. usually the shows after a PPV are. there are some surprises rumored for tonight.

i had to put air in my tires today. figures. this kind of shit only happens when it is hot as hell or snowing like there is no tomorrow. and since i don't park in one of the barns...

mom is starting to feel a little better. i'm still worried about her, but she has some tests planned for this week. looks like i will be playing chauffeur once again.

if i get a wild hair up my ass during my insomnia tonight, i may try my hand at some more "art". either that, see if i have any poems left rattling around this brain.

that is all for today folks. please return your seats to their upright position. enjoy the rest of your day and please, come again.

be well. be creative. be cool in this heat.

peace and chicken grease my enemies...

welcome to the deep freeze

when i went out this morning to feed the cats i didn't bother to look to see how cold it was. i knew it was COLD. i had on 5 layers and was determined to spend no more time outside than i absolutely had to. might be the quickest i have fed the cats in years. when i got back in, i checked to see how cold it really was. -11 degrees and a windchill of -38 degrees. well, at least the sun was out.

we probably only got an inch of snow yesterday. but, the inch of rain we got froze about as quick as i have ever seen anything freeze. thankfully, i did put out some ice melter when i woke up this morning. the stuff said it worked down to -7 degrees. it was -4 at the time. true enough, it melted the ice. that made me really happy and confident i could get out to the cats without falling on my ass and breaking something.

as for the birds, i threw out some birdseed for them on the ground. there's no use putting any in the feeders as the wind would just whip all of it down to the ground. it hasn't been this cold here since 1994. and i don't think the temps are done going down. but, it's supposed to be near 40 by the end of the week. just about as everyone will be sick with something. good times.

i did manage to get one playoff game right over the weekend as i called the 49ers win over the Packers. hopefully i do better this coming weekend.

my fantasy hockey team shit the bed this past week. and i got news this morning of an injury to one of my key players. hopefully it's not really serious. thankfully, i still have a 10 game lead in my division.

i did watch that Jimmy Fallon special last night. i had seen most of the stuff they covered. all i really hope is he does the same silly shit on The Tonight Show. might actually have to switch over from Letterman if that happens.

the New York Rangers play tonight at home against Columbus. not thrilled that i have to watch the Columbus broadcast of the game. hopefully the Rangers can actually start playing good at home for a change.

i am looking forward to the old school Monday Night Raw tonight. that should be a fun swim in the rivers of nostalgia.

other than that, my main focus will be staying warm tonight. i'm contemplating sleeping out in my chair as that room stays much warmer than my bedroom. of course, i might not sleep at all as i'll probably be up making sure the pipes don't freeze. good times.

a big hello to whomever is finding this blog in Russia. i'm hoping it's more than one person as there has been more than 300 hits in the last week from Russia. or, hello to my stalker from Russia. hope you enjoy.

that's all for me. i would type more but the heater out here in the computer room sucks. so i'm off to my chair in the only room in this old house that has adequate insulation. that's the joy of a cold winter on a farm. you'll always have a few layers on, inside or out.

hope everyone is warm and drunk. be well.

at least the corn was gone before the snow started...

i woke up this morning to temps around 28 or so and a light dusting of snow covering the grass and fields. thankfully the corn got harvested before this cold front came barreling through. i believe this may be our best corn yield since i have lived out here. hard to believe that's 16 years now.

i got a really good deal on some wine today. i couldn't pass on 6 bottles for under $60.

i'm still kicking myself over fantasy football this past week. the match i was losing by 11 i ended up losing by 3. that left me a bit sore as the winning points were on my bench. i'll have to make that game up quickly if i'm going to make the playoffs. and i had a horrible week picking games, 7-7. yikes.

i did watch most of The Voice last night. only a handful of the 12 performances were great in my opinion. with that much mediocrity i have no clue who is going to be in the bottom 3 tonight. should make for an interesting show.

i didn't watch much of Monday Night Raw last night. it was taped in Manchester, England so i knew what was going to happen from the live reports online. i did catch portions of the last hour. anytime you have The Shield, The Wyatt Family, CM Punk, and Daniel Bryan involved in something, i'm going to be watching. can't wait to see what all those guys produce.

tonight is a pretty big sports night. a couple of huge early season college basketball games that should be pretty entertaining. and while that is going on, the New York Rangers are playing the Devils tonight. my blood might get a little boiling this evening. hopefully the Rangers can keep the good streak they have been on going with a win over those fuckers this evening.

after i did the dishes this afternoon and watched some porn, i went through the poems and decided on which 16 i'll be sending out here in a few days. probably no later than Friday. my apologies in advance to the editors, etc.

sadly, for the second time, i believe my cat Gizmo 2.0 is once again dead. all the cats (14 of them) were present this morning, minus 2.0, which was what i was expecting since a good number of them have never seen snow before. if that cat shows up again ( i haven't seen it in over a month now, it was gone for 2 or 3 months last time) i will have no choice but to think that cat has evil powers. yes, i've been drinking.

found out today my mother will need surgery in the spring (could be sooner but she doesn't want to miss any basketball games) for the problem in her ears. wasn't thrilled when i saw that 1 of 4 people that have it end up losing their hearing permanently as a result of it.

lastly, i did watch a bit of the Hockey Hall of Fame inductions last night. whenever i decide to actually get a fucking passport, maybe i'll get up to Toronto to actually go to the place this time. i was up there when i was 13 but my father decided going there wasn't worth the time. can't imagine why i have hated that man for the majority of my life.

and on that uplifting note, i bid everyone a fond farewell. hope everyone is doing well or faking it good enough that no one suspects anything.

the day after the storm

we got around 9 to 10 inches of snow here yesterday. that was more than we got for the entire last winter. as the snow was falling yesterday, i had the pleasure/torture of watching Manchester United. never having the lead until the Mexican god Chicharito scores right on the 90th minute is not good for my heart i believe. a really entertaining 4-3 game, made all the better with Manchester City losing. lead is now 7 points. only bummer from yesterday, besides the usual shitty defense, was the injury news for Wayne Rooney. out at least 3 weeks with a knee injury. not good. hopefully more miracles are to come and Wazza comes back healthy and ready for the Champions League play.

shoveling this morning was not bad at all. to go with that 9+ inches yesterday was a 40 mph wind. the drifts happened to help me out partly. one sidewalk was basically clear. the other was a bitch to shovel, but not much ice at all to deal with. now, getting over to feed the cats was a bit more tricky. negotiating drifts of snow over a foot deep while still sleepy was a bit funny. saw all but one of the cats this morning. not sure if it's missing or was just hiding. not many of them have seen snow like that.

got done with all that to finally watch some meaningful hockey for the first time since the summer. team USA destroyed Germany in the World Juniors 8-0. was happy to see them play a great game, but the real test starts tomorrow. having to play Russia in Russia will be a huge step up. one piece of advice, stay out of the penalty box. if they get a point out of the game, i'll consider it a win. was also very nice to see Rangers draft pick JT Miller play well and score. hopefully he can keep that up.

my mother is sick so i'm doing my best to avoid that shit. so, i see myself spending the rest of the day in my room reading some books i got for Christmas.

good morning depression

when a stunning Yankee bottom of the 9th comeback becomes watching the captain carried off the field with a fractured ankle, say hello to my old friend depression. the swings of emotion last night were gut wrenching. i live and die with this shit. it should not come to a surprise to anyone when i'm dead in my mid 50's.

not really in the mood for sports today but it's Sunday. i've already picked up the trash and i have no desire at all to clean old antiques. so football it is. i have no confidence in my fantasy teams today. i have shitty choices all over the place.

keep in mind that my personal mantra since i was 5 has been aim low and accept when you outdo your own negativity. it's worked out ok so far in my life. i think it would probably take a lobotomy for me to have a positive view of life.

i imagine i will flip over to the Yankees sometime in my football viewing to see how bad it is. i haven't watched a Yankee playoff game without Derek Jeter since i was very young. early 1980's young. fuck i feel old at the moment.

all the crops are off as of last night. but, of course, the wind today is out of the south and blowing all the shit from the harvested fields up to the house. i may just be a power outage away from deciding it's time for the madness to take over.

fingers crossed.

how could i ever forget

i remember 11 years ago today like it was yesterday. the phone constantly ringing and waking me up in the morning. i go downstairs and listen to the messages on the voice mail. i turn on NBC just as they are showing the second plane going into the tower again. i just kind of stood there for a second and said in my own mind, welcome to the next war. i don't think the TV was turned off for the next 2 weeks. I'm not sure if i slept either. so, yeah, i remember. kind of hard to forget when you watch people jump out of buildings. not an everyday occurrence, at least in my world that is. part of me would like to see every never forget bumper sticker or tweet be changed to quit making the same fucking mistakes. that might get a little more attention.

now, back to our regularly scheduled programming. after a day of relaxing, recovering from the music festival and enjoying schizophrenic TV for a bit, i feel much better. congrats to Andy Murray on his first grand slam. i was a bit scared he was going to blow a 2 set lead. you don't recover from those. was flipping back and forth from that, Monday Night Football, Monday Night Raw and The Voice. let's just say that listening to Jerry Lawler nearly die was a bit sobering. and when i saw the look on Michael Cole's face, i knew this was legit. always a little spooky when pro wrestling gets real.

as for football, none of my players did much of anything last night. i held on to win 2 of my 3 fantasy football games. plus, i picked 11 of the 16 games correct. I'll take that start. just a little tinkering today as i get ready for the fun tomorrow (waiver wire and making picks). i think 2 of my teams have legit chances to win it all. the third one will be a struggle all year long.

did some heavy leg work with my poetry today. figured out what poems were going to go where. always fun when you are sending to places you have never sent to before. i might as well pick with fucking darts. now the fun part. typing and submitting. with a shitty internet. fuck me.

i remember when Yankees vs. Red Sox meant something for both teams. hopefully, the Yankees beat the shit out of Boston the next 3 days and make life a little easier for themselves. I'm not holding my breath that they will take that path, but it would be much fucking easier for me.

i will pay most attention tonight to the USA national team's game vs. Jamaica. a must have 3 points tonight if they actually want to make the World Cup. after watching them play down there and lose, I'm a bit interested in seeing how much do they actually give a shit or not. it would help if they actually remembered how to defend. that's always a good start.

the other side of happiness

the good news from Nerve Cowboy was totally unexpected. the thing is they normally only publish me every 7 years. this breaks that streak by about 5 1/2 years. a nice pat on the back for me. what sucks about the poem they chose to accept, "checked back into place", it's a poem about the muse. and seeing how the muse and i haven't spoke in almost a month and have no intention of ever speaking again, there's a bit of sadness that goes along with that poem now. though the poem itself is fucking funny as hell. just sayin'...

that being said, if anyone is interested in being the next muse, feel free to contact me. email, letters, smoke signals, your choice.

with the Yankees being off today, i decided to do a little shopping on amazon.com. needed to get my sister's birthday gift and of course a few things for myself. if everything arrives in a week, i'll be a happy boy.

speaking of my sister's birthday next month, i'm really looking forward to the music festival that falls on the same date. a ton of great acts and i'm actually going. should be a fucking blast. if anyone else is planning on going, let me know and maybe we'll meet up somewhere around downtown. for more info, check out http://www.downtownrevival.com/.

and while i'm plugging things, go check out The Sam Roberts Show Online at http://www.notsam.com/. i highly recommend episode #24. be sure to listen to the whole thing and hear my name mentioned near the end of the podcast. always kind of weird when someone a hell of a lot more famous than i think i am knows my name. i believe the podcast is also available at iTunes and Stitcher as well.

my usual Thursday night of television is on tap for this evening. i may sprinkle in a few moments of the Olympics as well. shaping up to be a good day for team USA. of course, i won't be choosing gymnastics over a talking dog and Louis C.K.

a Tuesday in the blistering sun

Another day in the 90's. Heat index is supposed to hit at least 100 today. There's a rumor that it might rain on Wednesday. I'm not going to believe it until I actually see it.

I'm pretty proud of Phil Hughes. It really looks like he has turned the corner. Only 2 real mistakes last night, only one of them a home run. He's really cut down on his walks this year as well. It always helps when Raul "I may be 40 but i can still hit a 3-1 fastball a country mile" Ibanez hits a grand slam in the bottom of the 8th. Nice 6-3 win last night. Sucks for the Blue Jays that Joey Bats injured his wrist last night. Hopefully it means he'll miss the next 2 games but be back in time to crush the rest of the AL East.

Side note, the Yankees have scored more than 3 runs in 40 straight games. A team record for a single season. That kind of shocked me considering all the great teams in the past. Of course, according to my superstitious ass the streak will end now that I've talked about. CC comes back tonight, so hopefully they won't need a ton of runs in case it does.

My cat Rita Dove made a rare appearance this morning. I haven't seen it in over a week or so. Not sure what it was eating because it looks really good.

Chuckled as I watched Monday Night Raw last night. I'm really hoping the writers are smart enough to make John Cena the first guy to cash in the Money In The Bank contract and lose. As a fan of CM Punk for years now, I'd love this title run to continue for over a year. The 1000th episode is next week, I'm hoping for 3 hours of good memories and some great wrestling. I fear a lack of both as age takes a toll as the last month of stars coming back has shown.

Not exactly sold yet on this Big Brother cast but I'm slowly getting there. Just enough drama and stupidity that I can laugh myself to sleep each night. Now, if there was only a little slutty activity...
